After twenty years in the Wild-West-styled Roughs, Waxillium Ladrian has been forced by family tragedy to return to the metropolis of Elendel. Now he must reluctantly put away his guns and assume the duties and dignity incumbent upon the head of a noble house. Or so he thinks, until he learns the hard way that the mansions and elegant tree-lined streets of the city can be even more dangerous than the dusty plains of the Roughs. Although technically book four of the Mistborn series, “The Alloy of Law” is self-contained and self-explanatory, and serves as a comprehendible gateway to Bandon Sanderson’s heftier epic fantasy novels. It’s an entertaining read with fun characters and a fantastically creative magic system and a world that’s developed beyond the classic “medieval fantasy” of old.
