Vote! April 2nd
River Grove Public Library District Board of Trustees has voted to place a referendum on the ballot April 2nd. This referendum will ask voters to approve a bond issue for $9 million to purchase the recently closed St. Cyprian school to re-purpose it for a larger, more modern library and other community-based space. This measure to purchase and re-purpose St. Cyprian School vs.building a new facility will save tax payers over $5 million.
If this referendum passes there are plans for a new playground developed on site.
The River Grove Library District was created in 1980. Since this creation they have always operated within their budget and have never sought additional funding.

THE REFERENDUM PASSES:
The library will be able to offer:
A new 28,000 sq. ft. modern facility to fulfill the needs of the River Grove Community.
MORE collaborative spaces and study rooms to accommodate students, entrepreneurs and groups.
MORE investment in new technology and bandwidth to keep up with technological advances.
MORE collaboration and partnership with schools, businesses and local organizations to serve our diverse community.
MORE new books, movies, music, downloadable content, games and resources
Restrict our ability to keep up with technology needs.
Increase the amount of dollars spent on an aging infrastructure rather than expanded services.
Prevent us from increasing spaces for studying, meetings and programs.
Limit access for persons with disabilities.
THE REFERENDUM FAILS:
HOW WILL THIS BOND AFFECT MY PROPERTY TAXES?
For a homeowner with a home market value of $200,000, the library’s tax rate per household will increase approximately $15 per month ($170.00 annually) to pay off the $9,000,000 general obligation library bonds over the next 20 years. The library bond issue for purchase and renovation of our new facility will be paid off in 20 years and will the drop off the tax bill.
HOW WILL A REPURPOSED AND EXPANDED LIBRARY BENEFIT
THE RIVER GROVE COMMUNITY?
New fire, smoke and life saving equipment will be installed along with security monitoring our entire facility and the new playground area. Safety is our #1 priority.
All entrances and shelving will become ADA compliant. A new elevator will be installed at the front entrance.
Improved access to technology will include a new computer training classroom, more electrical outlets, and space for new technologies like digitalization services for printing and a digital media lab.
Additional meeting and studying spaces will be added to accommodate students, online learners, tutors, entrepreneurs, small local groups, and the entire community.
All new mechanicals will be used to improve temperature, humidity, lighting, comfort, and energy efficiency. This will significantly reduce overall operating costs.
